Last month, on April 23rd, an evening of celebration and reflection was held at the Palazzo Ducale in Modena, on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Balsamic Vinegar Consortium of Modena . The participants, including associated companies and illustrious guests from the political and institutional world, honored the founders of the Consortium and discussed the prospects for the protection and evolution of the PDO and PGI product system .
During the event, the intention of setting up a second level Consortium between the PGI and the DOP was announced , which will work together for the good of the products and the territory. The Governor of the Emilia Romagna Region, Stefano Bonaccini, reiterated the importance of the Consortium of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena for the growth of the international reputation of the Modena area and of the entire region.
Founded in 1993 by 12 producers, the Consortium of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena has grown exponentially to reach 49 members, with the main objective of protecting and promoting the excellent Made in Italy product , Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. The product has contributed significantly to the economic and social well-being of the area, creating numerous jobs and allowing the vinegar cellars to become an important tourist attraction.
The promotion of the product contributes to the tourist rebirth of the city and of the entire provincial territory thanks to Modena's food and wine . It is essential to work for the protection of Italian agri-food excellences , such as Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, emphasizing their importance for the Italian economy and culture and to protect these products from Italian sounding (counterfeiting of Italian products).
At the conclusion of the meeting, a recognition was given to the twelve founding members, amidst everyone's emotion. Today, 92% of the production of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is exported and marketed in 130 different countries. The world of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena includes 95 cellars, 47 concentrators, 79 vinegar factories and 174 packers, with over 1,000 employees in the sector.
These figures place the product as the first ambassador of Made in Italy for export and in the top five of Italian DOP and IGP food specialties, alongside Grana Padano DOP, Parmigiano Reggiano DOP , Parma Ham DOP , Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP . The President of the Consortium expressed his satisfaction with the success achieved in thirty years and the importance this has for the territory and the international reputation of Modena as a symbol of agro-food excellence .
